“THE SUN” woodcut is published from 2 hand-drawn, hand-carved woodblocks to 47” x 37” Japanese paper.
One woodblock prints the glowing backdrop of sky, a 2nd prints the linework detail of the sun’s surface.
“THE SUN” is the largest woodblock I’ve made to date, the maximum width I can print—it as wide as my press roller!
Each print is pulled directly from the original woodblock carvings.
Oil-based inks are custom mixed & rolled to the wood’s surface with rubber brayers.
The ink is pressed into the paper by the uniform pressure of the roller.
A fine, glowing radiant surrounds the detailing of the sun itself. Each print is in some way unique!
After the 1st block is printed, the paper is rolled back up to roll back out atop the newly inked key (detail) block.
Both woodblocks hold multiple split-fountain ink rolls to bring vibrant, nuanced color to the artwork.
